    Default long awaited CANADA thread......

ok,so what do you guys know about becoming a Citizen in Canada...

when i just went back to TN i noticed alot of the people i used to hang out with moved up north....(like 4 or 5 of them)...

i'm REALLY leaning towards the same thing, for more private reasons(etheogenic studies, they keep scheduling shit)and just as much for Political reasons......

call me what you will, but if this bull shit country is going to so restrict my personal freedom to make it Illegal for me to have a common species of mint, along with countless other compleatly ludacris laws/punishments against natural subtances,i'm gonna fucking split...

and that goes with out saying ANYTHING about my political reasons for this thought, becuse those are just as long, if not longer than my short list up there^.......and i don't want this to be a Bitch fest of political nonsense...so DON'T DO IT.....please....

there's soo much more to this decison I couldn't possible EVER type it all but it basically boils down to those to VERY abriviated points....

    Happy,but sick of it,
    K.K.....

I have know a few people who relocated to Canada, some illegal and some legally. And I have heard it can potentially be very difficult to do it legally. There are a lot of requirements they expect as well as a buttload of paperwork and waiting. Now then, I have a few friends who moved there as roommates of Canadian citizens, and they only encounter trouble with employment, so many of them still work in Detroit. Which is of course just a quick drive from the border. Any specific questions.. let me know and I'll pick their brains for ya.

Ah Canada...great place to vacation...but you'd have to put a hand cannon to my head to get me to live there. Best of luck with it though...truth of the matter is if I was gonna pick another nation to call home Canada wouldn't be in the top 20...if you're gonna go...go big I say.

I'd take over a small pacific Island and be proclaimed a god...but again that's just me.

yeah if you wanna godge the draft move to Mexico its a lot harder for them to find you there plus living in Mexico is fucking cheap thank god i dont have to worry about getting drafted (my bad leg and horrrible gearing would automoatically disqualify me from serving infantry which is what they typically draft for)

i dont know how i found this site. it was made by an american that immigrated to canada. it has a page on how to immigrate and a bunch of other stuff on what americans should know if they're moving to canada.

some of it is pretty funny, like the 'canadianisms' and stuff. they're also pretty true.

Well depending on weither your looking for the legal route or the immigrant route, you have a lot of options.

An as much as I despise the thought of telling ANYONE, to move to Detroit, it is a big launch point for many people aiming to cross into Canada. The borders, both by bridge or tunnel are possiblly the easiest crossings in the entire world, they tend to be very lax, even after all the 9/11 problems. And so many Canadians and Metros cross back and forth so often is it very common place and no one blinks twice at numerous crossing.

I spoke to one of my friends and she told me she keeps legal residences in both countries because of her work (Stripper).
And so do a lot of her friends. Apparently between the nightlife and the Casinos, its becoming very common place for employers to pull strings for their employees. And I have been told that it is relatively simple to get a work visa. And the border guards dont give ya any hassle with crossings.

It's just a way to get your foot in the door and dive through when you get the chance.

OK what you gotta do to get into this country is just walk in, find the city you want to live in and go to the welfare office, they'll tell you exactly what to do , up here it's all about finding the form, no shit, I got a form once that looked like someone wrote it in crayon and then photocopyed,
but yeah we got so many new canadians here that a few more are always welcome

The one caveat is that unless your got the bucks your lifestyle will change. ie. alchohol is expensive with the VAT (value added tax); in fact, VAT is on lots of fun things. Vancouvers is a nice place to live but housing is extremely expensive; otherwise, you'll have to live in places where winters are pretty harsh.

I grew up in Canada but would prefer the States anyday with one exception, it's worth being in Canada for the health and welfare system. You'll be paying a lot more taxes for it but it is well worth it. It's also different too in Canada because unlike the US "melting pot," Canada is a cultural mosaic. Each ethnic group has stronger display of identity than in the States if you like that sort of thing.

Exactly what does that mean, stronger display of identity? I've been curious what a majority expects an ethnic minority to be like in the country they immigrate to. I've always found it insulting when comments are made that I don't have an accent. Well hell I was born in the states what kind of accent am I suppose to have? I think too much of the time ethnic identity is confused with some National Geographic view of said ethnicity...if you're not talking with an accent or wearing some out of date culteral "look" you're too "Americanized" or whatever.

In terms of those with very strong ethnic background it's pretty readily on display in the states...however our entertianment does not reflect it and only now are seats of power falling into those of the none white majority. One can't expect any ethnic minority to be outside of it's new culture and for it not to adopt large portions of it as their own. Depending where you go in the states you'll see a rather diffrent picture of what many think the states is...EVEN when those same people live in the U.S.

One of the saddest things to come out of ethnic identity was the rise of clubs based on ethnic background in high schools and colleges...they started out with well intentions then became a modern form of self segregation and overly politicized. Many civil rights activist of the past have voiced their opinion that all their work to tear down divisions between ethnicities have slowly been put up in the name of "cultural awareness". One of the biggest things many who visit their countries of family origin realize is that since they were either born or raised in ANOTHER nation they are not considered oart of that country of origin. I go to Mexico and no matter where I go I'm considered an American first and foremost...in the states I'm Mexican-American...it's a rather odd feeling to have your ethnicity played up as something positive and negative at the same time.

So really in terms of cultural identity in the U.S. you can't escape or downplay it since not only can you not get away with it but it's a double edged sword...to deny it is seen as a negative yet to play it up too much is seen as a negative as well. It's almost as though you have to be part cartoon or stereotype in certian situations...Latino actors face this all the time when they are told to have a heavy accent in their english speaking roles for example.

You're probably better off in Canada. People are less crazy there. You won't even need a gun! If you can imagine that. Plus I think you would like the bacon.... if infact you doing like greasy pig meat.

I would also recommend the Beer Store to anyone who passes by. Check some the Irish ales -- like Kilkenny -- out; they're fucking fabulous!

Also remember that you need to be polite, even when you're beating the shit out of someone.

IMHO, People in Canada proudly proclaim and identify closer with their roots than with the country as a whole. At least when I was living there, people would identify themselves first as Cree, German, Irish or Scottish etc... (i.e.) first before saying they were Canadian. Here in the US, most people will almost always say they are American first. This is just an observation on my part... as for the actual fact perhaps somebody with better insight can chime in.

wow stuff about identity and cultural mosaic and stuff

here's the main thing, Canadians like to make a fuss about everything, they know it wont really make a difference, it never really has ever here, we fuss about taxes, our politicians, our jobs , the large percentage we have to pay for booze, you name it we can complain about it, and the reason we can is because we know that it is our right to complain, and the one thing noone will ever take away from us is that right, see noone is monitering us, except for those few little things that should be eliminated imediately, we are actually quite free to do as we please, in fact the only thing you have to be concerned about here is freezing to death , and even that doesn't happen too often

you know the only thing I really dont like about about things here is I wish our government took as much pride in our countrys resources as I do

If you are into beer, a great, truely Canadian beer is Alexander Keith's Fine India Pale Ale!!!! Very nice. Sit back with some great East Coast music (stuff like what Great Big Sea plays)...get a bit tipsy then walk along the beach. Truely great. Or if you are more west coast, I grew up in Vancouver, and you are never bored there. It's beautiful, friendly, but with all the benefits of a major city centre! Ski in the morning, then lay on the beach all afternoon, then go dining and dancing at night....spectacular!

Sorry, very proud of my country....

alexander keiths will do if your visiting someone but the only beer I really like is CANADIAN , you know that as beer goes it's probably not the best but you just learn to really love whatever the hell they put in it, and after a few years nothing else will really do anymore
