Gawker.com, a very popular network of blogs, had its user database hacked and that means the usernames and passwords of everyone who comments on the site are now potentially known by hackers.
Gawker’s sites include Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Kotaku, Jezebel, iO9 and Jalopnik.
This means that if you use the same username and/or password on other websites as on Gawker you need to change the password on those other accounts so they aren’t accessed as well.
Wired:
One or more hackers operating under the name Gnosis released a 500-MB file apparently containing Gawker’s source code, commenter and staff passwords, and internal conversations between the company’s employees.
The e-mail addresses and passwords of hundreds of thousands of Gawker users have been compromised, the hackers said.
Gawker:
Passwords in our database are encrypted (i.e., not stored in plain text), but they’re still potentially vulnerable to hackers. You should immediately change the password on your account, and if you used that password on any other web site, you should change your passwords on all of those accounts as well.
