The measurement was revised as they got more data. You had it pretty much right, but they adjusted the number to a more accurate 5.4. Just FYI.

An earthquake is when two tetonic plates rub against eachothe, causing a vibration along a fault line.
There are several tetonic plates, the earths crust is not a solid peice, but rather a number of smaller peices that, as they move cause the contints to shift, a good example of which is the difference between the pattern of the landmasses to day and the super-continuit Pangea
as the land moves albeit very slowly, 1 or 2 inches a year, the edges grip because of friction, then all of a sudden, WHAM! They slip against eachother and slide until they are in there in line again, and the vibrations travel thruogh the crust, causing an earthquake.
ALSO with volcanoes, also found on faultlines as well as weak spots where the crust is thinner, when they erupt can send motion waves through the ground, but these are not traditional earthquakes, but they have the same effect, although generally weaker.

or maybe it is that whole "earth's crust" theory, but that seems kinda far fetched and all since the earth is only 2500 years old...
