SAN DIEGO -- A ground squirrel found at the Doane Valley Campground on Palomar Mountain has tested positive for plague, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health announced Wednesday.

"This is the first squirrel that has tested positive for plague this year in this park," said Gary Erbeck, director of the county DEH. "Please don't set up your tents near squirrel burrows, do not feed the squirrels and please warn your children not to play with the squirrels."

Plague is a bacterial disease of wild rodents that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of infected fleas.

So far, there have been no locally acquired human cases of plague reported in San Diego County, according to the DEH.

Signs have been posted warning visitors, campers and hikers in areas where plague has been confirmed, health officials said.

and the Army just said they have no idea where some virus samples went from their lab. How uncanny.

And its illegal or something to dig up the bodies of Plague victims because they still dont know how long the bacterium can survive. It is also believed that its similar to AIDS, but they cant run tests in case something goes wrong.

To be fair, I lose visus samples all over the place everytime I sneeze.

Seriously though, stuff you use or move around gets lost in any line of work. I'd hate to be responsible for something that sounded so scary to the public at large.
