Default What would you suggest for changes?

    THE LAW IS THE LAW

So if the US government determines that it is against the law for the words "under God" to be on our money,

    then, so be it.

And if that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation,

    then, so be it.

And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the schools, on which they deem their authority,

    then so be it.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding US citizen.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.

I would like to think that those people have the American Publics' best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?

Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot Post His Commandments in Government buildings,

I don't believe the Government and it's employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.

I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter.

After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break."

    After all ~

    it's just another day.

I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter.

It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct".

    In fact....

I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God...)

    because, after all,

our government says that it should be just another day....

    What do you all think????

If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the minority opinions and begin, once again, to represent the 'majority' of ALL of the American people.

    SO BE IT...........

What are you trying to say exactly?

Church and State are a compromise of boundaries and freedom...having the 10 commandments in judicial buildings is WRONG as is MANDATORY pryaer in schools...religion should not be used to guide a judicial system that evolves with time and circumstance...and no one should be made to pray or listen to other peoples prayers...

But...if a community is made up of a MAJORITY of religious people...then as the minority in said situation you gotta grin and bare it.

That's the funny thing about majority rule...it goes both ways depending onthe area.

The U.S. and most major western powers are Christian...so you can't get rid of christians holidays cause you happen not to be Christian...you may not like it but you gotta tolorate it.

Tolorence is really the key here...it's not always an easy pill to swallow. Like this fine forum...we tolorate and respect one another...even when we think the other person is a fucking idiot who should never breed.

I'm not saying anything. You see, I'm in Germany and we have other problems separating State and Church. This joke text has been doing the rounds for a few days or so. But, as always, it hits because people living in the country concerned find it believable (just like Porn 101, again).

Not only is mandatory prayer in public schools illegal, so is teaching religion as a devotional course, you can teach it academically (which is why most religion professors are atheists) The Old Testament class I'm taking right now, we don't start off with a prayer or anything, in fact, most of the psycho christians that are still there just sit in the back and stare daggers at the professor. It's actually pretty funny to see. But then again these are 19 year olds who've been taking sunday school for 6 years and trying to match wits with a religion professor who has had his Ph.D in Religion since their parents were in preschool.

I believe in a separation of church and state, but I also believe people should believe what they want to believe. I don't think we should do what France did and outlaw personal religious symbols in schools. So now muslim girls have to wear bandanas instead of the hood.

Yeah they really dropped the ball on that one...the ramifications will come to a head in time and it will not be pretty. Cause such a law goes a bit too far to the extreme of taking spirituality out of education and you simply cannot do that. You don't have to teach it, be part of it, or believe it...but you cannot deny it.

Plus I think you lose something as a society that way...you lose that sense of nationality, identity, and culture...because really it's the sum of the parts that make the whole...and in every modern nation the parts are as diverse as ever.

With reference to the above comments on religious holidays....
First of all, I totally agree with the separation of religion and government, they have nothing to do with one-another (well, that's not entirely true in some countries, but I'm thinking of Canada and the US right now)
The comment about the government working on sundays...that may have originated as religious, but we have weekends inorder to allow for some recreation and relaxation in our lives. I mean, we could have monday and tuesday's off or whatever, we just happened to keep saturday and sunday out of convenience. (of course I never get those days off, because I work in a convenience store, but anywho)...

I'm an athiest, so I think my opinions on the holidays are fairly valid...
What do I think of when I think of Christmas? Do I think of Christ? No. The birth of Christ was the origin of the holiday, but times change, and even athiests celebrate Christmas (or the "holidays") out of habit. Why eliminate a holiday that has been around all our lives, when we can simply associate it with other things. Having time off at Christmas is important to me not because I want to worship Jesus, but because I want to be with my family. I enjoy the tradition!

Think about how many people celebrate St. Patrick's day without even knowing why they are celebrating it. For a lot of people, it is simply a time to get together with friends and have fun (and drink a lot). Use the same attitude to examine why we still celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc. nationally. They are holidays because we are humans and need some time to relax, spend time with those we love, and have some fun. We keep the holidays not for religious reasons, but out of habit and necessity!

The idea is supposed to be tolerance for people's religion, regardless what it might be. If someone wants to pray, while they are in school, fine. If they want to wear a head scarf, or a cross, or a pentagram, fine. I also think it should not be forced on students to pray, or force them not to pray. But whatever people do for their religion, should not interfere with the education process. Pray on your break. Pray at lunch. Pray before or after school. But don't make the teacher have to interrupt teaching math, because you have to pray to Mecca at that moment. Too bad. I just think that when it comes to government, and education, the focus should be on education, and on running the country. Religion should be secondary. Do whatever you want, as long as it does not interfere with the education process. Same thing with cops, etc. If a cop or a judge wants to wear a cross, or have a copy of the ten commandments in their courtroom, that's fine. As long as they follow the law, and treat people fairly, regardless of religion.

What I find amusing about the whole argument, as far as Germany goes, is that they are often shooting themselves in the foot. The banning of headscarves in schools is so formulated that teachers cannot wear religious symbols when teaching, the headscarf being one. This means that nuns must change into civilian clothes before they are allowed to teach ...
