    Default Read anything good lately?

Everyone here seems to read regurlarly so has anything caught your lately? A book? Magazine article? Poem tatooed on a guys shoulder?

Last good book I read was "I Wake Up Screaming" by Steve Fisher. A fun lil tale set in 1950's Hollywood. Low level players team up to sell the next "big star" to the world only to have crash around them. It features one of the creepiest and most accurate portrayals of an L.A. cop in it...the kind you hope you never run into...ever.

I'd go into more detail but the twists and turns are what make it so fun...and spoils it right fast to give even one away. Not an easy find at times but worth picking up. At less than 200 pages you can read through it fast.

Currently, Im going back and forth between 3 books, Deception Point, by Dan Brown. Its pretty good, but not as good (so far) as The Davinci Code. Im also reading Anyone you want me to be, by John Douglas. Its a true account of the serial murderer John Robinson, who lured his victims via the internet. Lastly, I picked up a copy of Van Helsing, I bring it out when I have some waiting to do etc, to kill some time. Im sure I will pick up more soon, I seem to be addicted to bookstores.

lol - i just read a brief history of time, so at the moment i'm re-learning physics so i can understand the theorums a little better. Reading physics is a bit like reading French - i get the jist, but the intricacies are lost on me. textbooks are my life right now... but i did get to read 'valley of the dolls', 'Big Sur' and for the hundreth time 'A Clockwork Orange'

I have - "Junkie" by William Burroughs. It was honest, historic and semi-autobiographic, with a sort of surprising ending. I'm not the hugest Burroughs or Beat writer fan, but he's a little on the edge and while he can be pretty abrasive and judgemental about other people, he's just like them and admits to that quite a bit.

I was just reading the Psychopathia Sexualis, over at my neighbours place. It's a book from eightteenninetysomething about sexual psychopaths. Lot's of snuff and child molesting stuff in there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not actually turned on by child molesters, but the book itself is really interesting. And there are lots of statements and interviews with the killers, rapists, psychos, etc.. and everything's written in that classy 19th century style
My neighbour found it in the university library, so I doubt there are any chances to get it outside of Germany.

You know if you can, check out crimelibrary.com, it's got some fun stuff historically and internationally as far as a more story type of thing goes. A great book about the U.S. and its crime going back to the Pilgrims is "Bloodletters and Badmen" by Jay Robert Nash. He actually interviewed people like Meyer Lansky and many old time crooks that are now dead. He also wrote a book on Gunfighters of the old American west too. Bloodletters in thicker than an encyclopedia too. I had this oldtime Metalhead friend of mine who locked himself in his room and did nothing but read nearly 800 pages in two days!

Said he felt real strange after that and didn't pick up another crime book for nearly a year, or read much for that matter.

I read the Harry potter series last week.

Now I remember when the series first started (around the time I graduated from High school) thinking that I would never read what I used to consider a "Children's book series".

Much to my shock I enjoyed the movies...

But the books?!? I finally gave in and bought them last week, and I've got to say that Rowling deserves all the credit and money she's earned. Her techniques for characterization are unparalleled. I mean even her third tier characters connect with the reader on a personal level through her use of intricate personality development.

I really can't wait to see the 5th book on screen (Tonks appears and I LOVE women with spikey purple/pink hair)

the Harry Potter series is most definitely the best (and most fun) story I've read in the past 2 years. Granted it becomes MUCH darker in the 4th and 5th books (when people start dying) but then that's what makes it interesting.

that's another thing she uses the technique of allowing you to connect to the characters in "peacetime" (much like "band of brothers" or "Trigun" does) before placing these people who you now like into terrifying situations.

I mean watching Harry go from being the hero of the wisarding world to Social Outcast with only a few close friends is hard to watch if you've ever been through something like that yourself... but it just makes the story that much more powerful.

It's like with every year harry ages, the Rowling's story telling method matures more.

Anyway, If you haven't read the books I highly recomend them. (especially the latter two books.)

memorydream: Thanks for the link, seems to be a great site, I'll do some in-depth investigation later ,)
I think I can understand your friend there. Reading such books on the wrong day, when you're in some poor mental shape, it's possible that they really affect you. Just like any other media. Give some kids a pair of guns and send them into their school, publish it on tv, and some weeks later, you'll have a shitload of imposters.
Anyway, have you ever heard of Fritz Haarmann? On of the most famous german serial killers. He died 1925 in Hannover. He murdered 24 boys and since he was running a bucher shop, it's assumed that he made saussages out of the corpses. I once had a book about him. Great to read ,)

I'm reading The Blood of Innocents right now.. it's a cool book about a triple murder that happened in the early 90's in Arkansas.. and three teenages were framed for murder because of the way they looked, music they listened to, and being involved in a "Satanic Cult".. Really good book. I recommend it.

Some of you might remember this case.. they also made some movies.. The west memphis three or something like that..

www.wm3.org - the site about the case.

Anyway.. You can read a little bit of the book, and get a feel for what its all about here..

I've been following that case for awhile now. It is really scary to read how the police dept. botched the investigation. I've studied things from all the different view points that I could find so far. Are the boys innocent? I don't know for certain, but it sure looks that way. The so called "evidence" that they were convicted on is just ridiculous. All three boys should get a new trial.
