Default Just got back from seeing Superna play the famous Cat Club...

I hadn't been out to the Cat Club in a while (for those non-LA folks, it's next door to the Whiskey), or at least not since Monster Cable Show or something or other refurbished the interior. I remember being really drunk there with Taime and Amelia and a bunch of wannabe scenesters some years back, during the heyday of Pretty Ugly. Anyhow, we went to see Superna play this evening and it was really enjoyable. She totally rocks and I'd recommend folks check her band out. She was also looking super hot in her Blue Blood Hoodie, I must say . Anyhow, it was a fun time. (even if it didn't totally fit with the kind of Emo band that played before her.) I know she has more shows comming up, so get out there if you get the opportunity.

that reminds me of a rant a freind of mine posted:

"You know hipsters are self-ascribed now? Like, they actually actively refer to themselves as hipsters! The word that we used to use to make fun of them! You guys, "hipster" is not a term of endearment. It's an insult. What the hell? Calling yourself a hipster is you saying, "Oh yeah, I'm in touch with what's hip and I keep up on current trends in fashion and media". Which is fine if you're, you know, an idiot or something, but when did doing your own thing and liking things based on quality over popularity and fashion go out of style?

I like a fair amount of indie rock stuff, don't get me wrong. I love Ted Leo and the Mountain Goats, but it really just amplifies the ridiculousness of the hipster crowds when I try and go to their shows. You know people don't dance to Ted Leo? If you go to a T-Lo show and drink too much and get up front and start shaking your ass like no one's watching, you will notice most of the crowd staring at you contemptuously. "Shows are for standing with your arms folded, douchebag," they'll tell you through snakebite piercings and slanted haircuts draped across their oversized sunglasses. "Quit bumping into me, I'm TRYING to look uninterested."

I like shows where, if you're just going to act as a spectator, you'd better get as far back as possible, because you will be knocked over. I love the looks on people's faces, too, when the mosh pit spreads. And it ALWAYS happens. It's always some lanky dude with a three-foot-tall girlfriend who came to enjoy a nice quiet evening of standing with their arms folded when all of a sudden WHOOOA NOW! This is getting out of HAND! This is too much movement for a rock club! My favorites are the guys who refuse to move back, who stand there with like their entire BODY surrounding their girlfriend, encasing her in a protective human shield. And when you, GOD FORBID, bump into them, they will shove you violently away and give you the most evil, hate-filled scowl you will ever see.

Because they're here to have FUN. And you're messing up their hairdos."

I think it is reasonable to be self aware, and if you are into knowing what is current and cool, I think it's ok to admit it. I really don't like the idiot act people try to play off like they 'just happen to be that cool.' There is a big difference, to me anyway, between some aggro prick out of his element at a punk show and some silverlake 'hipster' lying about how long it took them to pick out their carefully crafted 'I don't care about appearances' outfit. I care about what is current, I don't like it all, but the concept is important to me. I live in Hollywood. I'd be an idiot if I tried to pretend otherwise. However, some people try too hard. They are the reflection of what is cool, rather than the embodyment of it. Every hipster isn't hip, some are, some are not, no matter how hard they work it.

I can agree with that. there's certainly nothing wrong with liking every single thing that becomes the latest "hot" item. the problem is the difference between being in love, and being in love with being in love. you see? there are people that honestly do not like these things, but they like the social status that is afforded to people that do, so they pretend that they do. and that's what makes some a fake, a hipster. it begs the question, if it wasn't "cool", would you still think it was? if you can answer yes, then you have a sense of self. if the answer is no, then one is probably lacking that and finds it neccesary to flock from trend to trend.
