The more you read about what's really going on in that city the more you see what a slice of hell it really is...can't say I ever had the romantic visions of New Orleans others had so I was not all that shocked it fell into chaos all that fast. It's no secret that the poverty is high, the cops are corrupt in epic ways, and it's administration from the city to state level is highly questionable.
Really this was the LAST place in the country you'd want to be stuck in a disaster like the one unfolding...too much of the recipie for ruin was already cooking so to speak.
My earlier notions of "things will turn out all right" are dead and gone. It's sad that an Iraqi city gets better support than a major U.S. metropolis. The support heading their now is clearly a bit too late for many...especially with the reports of beatings, *****, murder, carjacking, looting, and gunshots...
I've heard commentary on this situation I won't repeat here since it's not something I buy into and it's less than what I would call "enlightened" but one thing was said that did bug me...and in some ways it seems rather true...
With the majority suffering at the moment in New Orleans being poor, has this played into the reasoning for the slow response by emergancy services?
