    Default Cheval Noir

Dark Horse Comics has always been the home to artistic and challenging American comics but always the prime importer of European and Asian masterworks. One of their best creations to highlight this was the anthology series Cheval Noir which ran from the early to mid 90's.

This series contained amazing works by European, Asian, and North American artists. All were serialized and usually had about 4 stories going on at one time with the occasional pin up. Many of these stories really only made it to U.S. shores in this anthology so unless you were hip in the import scene you simply couldn't see or read these stories anywhere else...let alone in english.

This is an anthology series for those who enjoy the medium and illustration as a whole but also for those who want more varied stories. From sci-fi and horror to the surreal and magical, Cheval Noir pretty much gave you your $$$'s worth. It sadly got "thinner" as time went on with fewer stories but the quality was always high and you can score this series in the back issue bin pretty cheap. If you want to make your own comics...you MUST collect this series. It's like a grand comics school in terms of varied styles (story, art, content) and contains some pretty rare works by well known comic artists.

It's not the most well known or remembered series nowadays but it was always up their in terms of bringing something new to the American comics scene and like it's sister book Dark Horse Presents it was home to some of the most creative works of its day.

If you find yourself in a GOOD comics shop...hunt it down or try online.
