For some reason, Prince changed his name to

Why would he change his name to the Symbol of Male/Female?

He changed it back recently though.

But why?

Legal reasons. I think to break a contract with his record company. Not sure though.

What Toe Cutter said, he had a shitty record deal that had a time limit on it. So he changed his name so he wouldn't have to do another record with the company. As soon as the contract expired he changed it back.

To make it more clear, he was contractually obligated to do several albums for that record company. But he did not want to work for them. So he changed his name, and gave them two shitty albums, and then left. They tried to say that the albums were not acceptable, but he took them to court, etc... I think the name change was partly to make it hard to market those albums, and to make himself a hassle to that record company. So that when he was finally independent again, he would make albums under his regular name again...
