Thread: RIP David Aaron Clark

  1. #1

    Default RIP David Aaron Clark

David Aaron Clark took me to my first genuine serious BDSM club.

Whether we were checking out a new K-pop singer, attending a medievalist wedding, or standing in line at a book signing, David Aaron Clark was always kind to me. He was not a self-serving fair weather friend or a hater bad weather friend; David Aaron Clark was a real friend to me.

David Aaron Clark is one of the last people still fighting the good fight who really knew me, not my digital persona, not some press, not some rumors, not the guarded self I now present to new people, but the real me. Was one of the last people, not is. Damn it.

David Aaron Clark wrote the first big feature review of Blue Blood magazine in print.

Later, Blue Blood wrote up David Aaron Clark’s first video project which he directed, wrote, acted in, and literally spilled his own blood for.

David Aaron Clark was a brilliant writer. He had a knack for turning even the most mundane video review into something truly entertaining and readable. He was my labelmate at Masquerade/Rhinoceros with his novels The Wet Forever and Sister Radience and the Ritual Sex anthology he and Tristan Taormino co-edited. He and Charles Gatewood collaborated on the blood fetish book True Blood for Last Gasp. DAC was a prolific writer and his talents were seen in many venues from magazines and newspapers to screenplays. A lot of people will probably remember him for his porn video writing and directing, but he created a diverse body of work.

Things were really looking up in 2009 for David Aaron Clark. Evil Angel had actually given him the creative freedom to show some of his true artistry with the Pure movie, produced by Aiden Starr and starring Asa Akira. He used to joke that AVN created a Best Asian Feature category just so they would have an award to give him every year. I think he won for Best Screenplay too and they didn’t invent that award only for him. He was a good person and would really give himself to what he made and I always felt he deserved even more recognition than what he got. David Aaron Clark always deserved an award for his creative work across multiple forms of media because of how much he put in.

David Aaron Clark and I have known each other for approximately sixteen years and ten months. He welcomed me into his home when we lived far apart and I had to travel to see him. We live so close together in Los Angeles, I wish I’d made the time to see him more. Lived so close, not live so close. With the internet, it is so easy to keep up moderate communication and, being an adult, it seems like it just gets harder and harder to make in-person time.

The last thing I said to him was the trivial thought that I wish there was going to be another season of 4400. I wish there was going to be another season of the notorious DAC.

I keep wanting to add details like how he played a non-sex role as a pirate in Joone’s Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge, but I could go on all day listing cool interesting bits and pieces about his life. He lived an adventurous and interesting life, dated wild women, had unusual sex, went cool places, and left behind a significant body of work. That is more and better than a lot of people, and I know this is trite, only I wish he were still here; I feel he got taken way way too soon.

When I can stop crying for any extended period of time, I’m going to look for some photographs Forrest Black and I took of him and post them.

Rest in peace, David Aaron Clark. You are missed.

Oh cool, you found that pic of one of his many awards. Amazing I could find the button on the camera that time in Vegas. And now, not even in Vegas, I was all like, where do we have that picture . . .

oh wow. I knew David when I was in the valley. I remember him as being one of the few people in the biz able to hold an intelligent conversation, one of the few people I could actually stand to talk to for more than 10 minutes without cursing the fact that I didn't have a flame thrower. I don't know if I knew him well enough to call him friend, but I always thought he could be.

*raises glass in toast* To what could have been. Peace be with you, David.

If you had a flame thrower, he was a good man to help you load it too. Very intelligent and very tell it like it is.

He was the first person I was a fan of before starting Blue Blood who I got to know because of doing Blue Blood. I still can't believe he is gone.

Hey All. Just wanted to join the list of people so sad to see Dave leave this Mortal Coil. Tho' I know he is already lounging with some Absinthe....discussing erotic poetry with the greats...smoking a bowl with Caravaggio --and best of all corrupting the Cherubs to do some naughty photography!

Dave, wow. I met him in the 80s in college - Rutgers University -- and dug his writing, music and craziness. I was so, so lucky that Dave asked me to play bass in his band FALSE VIRGINS --we did an album called "Infernal Doll". I don;t make ONE CENT on that music--but if you don;t know that side of Dave -- the awesome punk-rock-skronk-guitar lower-east-side rocker -- then check it out, it's on itunes. SO funny - JUST 48 hrs ago -- I was showing my dad the album cover and talking about Dave. So so weird, life is. I am sorry that altho we were in touch about once a year, I missed getting together with him on a recent trip out west for me. Goddamit! Always make sure you see friends that are important and stay in touch. It's all we have .

Look for Dave's brilliant and creative writing, he left us a lot of art. I have to catch up on his film work and recent art. Loved the guy. I agree with the first poster -- what was unique about Dave was --he was the genuine item - a nice guy!! Always kind and respectful. For me - he showed that you can be a VERY, VERY edgy artist and yet -- maintain a basic sense of humanity. OK. Off to find my DAC chapbooks.

Thanks so much for sharing your memories of DAC.

I think he set a standard, being someone I met so early in my own endeavors, where I thought all the cool creative edgy people I met were going to be as kind as he is. If you happen to be able to dig up chapbooks he did, I'd love to see digital snaps or scans or something of his work like that. My email is at this link or post here.

I knew Dave when he was back in NYC. He's one of the few people I met in the scene who I really liked and who was a nice guy, not an ego-maniacal jerk.

It was always great when he was back in the city and I'd run into him. It happened far too infrequently.

I have a copy of his book, Sister Radiance, that he signed for me. I treasure it.

Damn. It's too soon and he was too young. I'm going to miss him. Farewell my friend. You will be remembered.

You show incredibly poor taste posting this here, Mr. Cowardly Fake Sockpuppet Name, but, if you are going to make such an assertion, the TOS of this site require that you back up what you say. I supported my assertion that DAC was awesome. So what in the world would make you say something so awful about such a great person?

"Cowardly"? How? As compared to the many lion-hearted intellectuals, esthetes, innovators and war heroes who populate this board?
"Fake Sockpuppet Name"? As opposed to "real" names like "Amelia G."? Why are you hiding behind a partial pseudonym? Out of fear that some of your "fans" might stalk you? Out of embarrassment for your former identity? Or does the "G" stand for a surname too ethnic, too prosaic or otherwise incompatible with your self-image as a goth "goddess".. Even Karen O. cops to her surname. But not the fame-dusted Amelia....

"Great person"? Well, by any measure of merit, Dave Clark simply fails to make the grade. Filmmaker? Why don't you ask Nick Zedd or Richard Kern what they think of Dave Clark's moronic pornos? "Zen and the Art of Fellatio"? Blech.
"Bottom-feeding"? Some years ago I saw him Dave Clark drink piss onstage at a New York performance space--and I think this alone supports my use of the descriptor "bottom-feeding" Plus, didn't the lead singer for False Virgins---his meth-addicted, hooker girlfriend Jean---commit suicide by leaping out a flophouse window as the cops broke down her door?. More recently, didn't his best friend Brian Surewood [sock-puppet names, anyone?] get sent to prison for killing someone? Clearly this is not the cognitive elite we're talking about here. Au contraire---it is the lowest of the low.

Am I now more fully in compliance with your discerning Terms of Service?

Dude, you had a good troll going. Now you've just identified yourself as a pretentious bourgous twat - clearly trolled himself, by a dead guy no less - who no one here is going to feel bad about disagreeing with.

That rant didn't back up jack; it merely specified the stink of the particular color shit you're slinging and referred a bunch of would-be authority figures. And what's worse, you posted it because she told you her ToS required it. I can't even type that without laughing, and you actually obeyed.

    Just... fail.

Yes, you are now more in compliance with Blue Blood's TOS. Raza really covered the basics, but let me just add a note about stage names vs. cowardly sock puppet names, just so you have your definitions straight.

Brian Surewood might be a nom de porn, but there is an actual human and specific persona associated with that name. I don't know what Nick Zedd or Richard Kern's mommas call them, but people know who they are, so, when they do something under those names, it is not cowardly.

H.P. Birdcraft is associated with no human being and no body of work and, thus, is a cowardly shield for someone, who wishes to malign the dead, without sharing any information about him or her self which might be used to judge the biases or accuracy of his or her statements.

But we really don't need to know any more about you because Raza clearly has your number.

By "actual human and specific persona" you mean "convicted felon", right?

Raza: Plus, you spelled "bourgeois" wrong. NEVER use a word you can't spell---unless your objective is expose yourself as a subliterate poseur.

I'm guessing Raza's English, even with the occasional typo, is better than your Dutch.

So who is the actual human and persona H.P. Birdcraft represents? What does H.P. Birdcraft do for an avocation, a vocation, fun, sex, criminal record, anything? My best guess (although I'm annoyed to have devoted even a minute to contemplating this) is that you are somebody who hung out in the East Village for five minutes in the 80's, just long enough to feel like you can namedrop Nick Zedd or Richard Kern and be envious of David Aaron Clark, but you never created anything good or bad yourself, and mainstreamed decades ago.

What's so wrong with drinking piss or making a cheesy porn movie? and why does that preclude that you can't have relationships with people that would care about you and feel bad or honor you after you died?

I've never heard of the guy before now, but that doesn't offer much of a compelling case to negate the things that Amelia has said.

If that's what makes someone happy, why not?

You're worse than a nobody. You're an asshole who decided to come on a thread honoring a dead man by his friends and write something totally inappropriate there. You're the lowest piece of garbage there is.

I'm not a rock star. I'm just a good old boy who gets pissed when his dead friend is disrespected by a dirt bag low life.

By the way. Nice bird. I looks delicious. Where'd I put my twenty gauge?

    I'm thinking.................
    ......................................Baked Dove with Bacon

    1 Dove
    6 Bacon, slices
    Salt & pepper to taste
    Water

Wrap bacon slice around de-boned dove breast. Place in shallow baking dish and add salt and pepper. Add 1 cup water. Cover and cook at 350 degrees for 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

Wolfie, you have illustrated 100% my various points

Meanwhile, here's a recipe you might consider:

    Wrap head in bacon
    Place 20-gauge muzzle in mouth
    Pull trigger

    Bon apetit!

Mister Birdcraft also needs to keep in mind that people have different tastes and interests. You people mention GG Allin, and he is a perfect example of a "bottom feeding maggot", and yet people have every right to like him, like his music, or see some value in the things he did, even if they are disgusting or crass. I never met David Clark, but it seems perfectly logical that some people might think he's awesome, where some conservative christian might see him as a terrible human being. But it makes very little sense to come on this message board, where we are generally supportive of alternative lifestyles, and bash on someone. Especially someone who's dead, and can't defend who they are, or what they do...

    Dave Clark compost mortem continues:
Props to TheDeathKnight for civility and a spark of intelligence in this matter.
In truth, G.G. Allin was something more than a "bottom-feeding maggot"; he had a shamanic quality best articulated in Nick Zedd's "Totem of the Depraved":
"I once asked G.G. why he dedicated his life to such a selfless mission, injuring and poisoning himself to the point of hospitalization to simply entertain a few hundred strangers. He couldn't say. He was an imbecile. He insisted he hated everyone and didn't care about his audiences, but in reality, he cared deeply, far more deeply than they deserved. He really thought his audiences merited his hate---a hatred so misdirected it always ended up hurting himself [sic] more than it did the spectators looking for a cheap thrill."
Compare and contrast with gluttonous, grandiose, bargain-debasement porn functionary Dave Clark. To call Dave Clark's "work" forgettable is an insult to amnesia.
On that poignant note, I'm off to the Filmmakers' Cooperative benefit on East 4th tonite. Got some serious sucking up do.
    Rest In Pigshit, Dave.

H.P. Birdcraft, I was going to point out to karyn that it is really not okay to post other people's personal information here, but, as you've already responded I'll leave that part. I suppose it is morbidly comical to see you peevish that someone missed part of your resume, when you were posting under something other than your normal byline.

Before the internet, it was less obvious who had a dumb feud going. I have no idea which Village scenesters from the early 90's have some beef with me or Blue Blood because of our friendships with people like David Aaron Clark or Michael Saint or Sebastian Poe. A search indicates that I have an issue of Gauntlet in a box in storage which has your byline on an article I don't recall. (Blue Blood and Gauntlet used to trade zines.) But basically you are a total stranger who thinks we have enough of a transitive relationship that it is okay for you to come attack me while I grieve.

I've never seen Nick Zedd's movies, although I always think he is smoking hot in photos, and would probably view something if sent to me for review. Legs McNeil is one of my greatest personal inspirations as a journalist, so I was too intimidated to have him interview me for his adult book when he asked. I shot a Dwarves album cover once. It is so obligatory to drop Hunter S. Thompson's name that I never assign much meaning when someone does. Was indifferent to GG Allin's work, but would not have crashed a memorial for him to mention it. I've met J.G. Thirwell a few times, probably all utterly forgettable to him, including one time when he was one of the earliest people I interviewed as a rock journalist, and Foetus was in heavy rotation on my CD player at the time of Blue Blood's birth. I always thought Lydia Lunch was cool, partly because of her collaboration with Thirwell.

I like Paul Krassner's work, although I don't recall seeing your byline in any of his projects. I don't read the National Enquirer. I read what you wrote for BME and everything appears extremely disrespectful to all body modification, including ink, piercings, and more mainstream surgery, and heaven forbid overweight people. I see that you apparently had some kind of childish internet flame war with Joe Christ, who also was always nice to me, and who also passed away this year. You also seem very disparaging of anything adult-related, although you say you worked in the belly of the beast for years.

I was horrified that someone would come into an obituary thread and disrespect the dead because they once saw a performance art piece they didn't care for. Your action was so extreme that I assumed at first you must have been wronged in some deeply important way.

I am even more appalled that you actually think it is cool to malign David Aaron Clark to those who mourn him because like twenty years ago Al Goldstein fired you and hired DAC in your place. What you have done here is one of the most evil things I have ever witnessed.

I understand (in a solely intellectual way) that some people take joy from the negative attention trolling gives them and some people take joy from other people's suffering. Viscerally, I don't get it, but I understand the concept. But to troll an obituary thread over something so petty? You are so small-hearted that you begrudge DAC having people who will miss him?

I do not have a lot of taboos, but there is nobody on this planet where I would approach their mourning friends to desecrate them in death.

On a more positive note, I went to a very nice casual memorial last night where a number of his friends gathered to reminisce. Before heading over, I posted a little gallery of snaps and a list of links to various remembrances of David Aaron Clark.

Damn you're stupid. Everyone knows you'd never use anything less than a 12 gauge for doing something like this.

Oh yes myself & my Lady Sky Claudette Soto knew David back in the day when he was here in NYC and he was always very respectful and outgoing to both of us ! , and it always makes us Sad to see someone that we knew go off to the other side , and what makes it worse is that fact that myself & Sky are planning to move out West sometime next Year and knowing that we will not be running into Dave after not seeing him for all of these Years makes us both equally Sad ! .

No matter what one does in & with their Life one cannot please everyone all of the time and as we all know some will like you & some will Hate you if for no apparent reason then it being that they don't like your Style or how you Live your Life ! , everyone is entitled to their own Opinion & my Opinion of David Aaron Clark was always a good one , but then again someone else out in the Cosmos would not feel the same about him , their Life will go on as well as yours , Arguments never go anywhere & the fact is that everyone here has a Memory of him be it Positive or Negative & Life goes on but the Soul never Dies & will Live on through his writings , Publications , Films , whether Loved or Hated .

David Aaron Clark I Wish You A Safe Journey In The Neatherworld !

    I miss David.

And quite contrary- David I knew would have laughed and thought it a hoot that someone would write terrible things about him in this thread.

It is indeed great artist work well done!

He was a gentle, caring, loving soul.

I miss the days in San Fran with him and visits to LA.The desert porn shoots , etc.

    I miss you guys too!Amelia!

He was witty and funny guy.
And all he ever wanted was money to do a film that he had full artistic freedom.
I have the feeling that Pure was one such film and have the feeling that David was- GASP! -satisfied.

    such amazing soul.

Only if this were Fail Blog... in which case, don't sell yourself short! The ability to so thoroughly kiss a douchebag's ass in only one four-word sentence would have earned you at least 50% of Birdbrain's "win."

This situation reminds me of the recent death of Michael Jackson... I could totally see someone who had a molestation experience with MJ, coming out and saying they are glad his is dead, and that he was a scumbag who molested them. While everyone else is talking about what a great artist he was. And it might be the same kind of thing here. Maybe David was a great artist, but maybe someone had a personal experience with him where he was a jerk to them in person. Or maybe you hate his art, but other people had great personal relationships with him. Either way, it's probably better to just leave well enough alone, especially if that person's no longer around to do further harm or further benefit to society.

I know it is your schtick to act like Captain ReasonableWhoSeesAllSides, but this is not an occasion where that is okay. You can apologize right now for comparing my recently departed friend getting a job this troll was fired from with child molestation. Never mind the fact that the person who claimed to have been molested by Michael Jackson recanted when he passed away, whether or not it was true.

My inboxes have been filled with notes from people who have had appalling experiences over the years with this sick person who would desecrate a memorial. Some have requested that I just delete all the inappropriate posts and, although I really do not like to do that, it may end up being the right thing to do. No, I'm not going to share what I've been told because it only dignifies this terrible terrible person.

I don't think that anyone who is a guest in my home here should think it is okay for some ill-bred scumbag to slag my recently departed friend here, where I posted to honor his memory, while I am grieving. I don't think that kind of dehumanized disgusting behavior is okay anywhere. If you can't respect something which is such a basic part of treating other human beings with humanity, there is something wrong with you.

It bums me out that my email, *******, FaceBook, ICQ, AIM, phone, Twitter, other forums I post on, and IRL are all filled with people saying normal kind things to ease the normal mourning process, people who appreciate that I honored DAC's memory here and elsewhere, people who cared about David Aaron Clark, and people who care how I feel. So I'm a little baffled that only on these forums -- which up until a few months back, were always my favorite place to interact -- are there people lacking the most basic humanity. Including people who used to seem cool. Insight?

It really might be that the person is actually truly sad by loss of David and doing him th biggest favour.- Giving him the best compliments.

I know David- he would have LOVED being trashed in this thread. He would have laughed at it- because , it's easy for people to sit around and say what a great guy he was, how much we miss him. Much more authentic and difficult to get people that would care enough to trash him on obituary thread. It means he did some real work that means something to someone.

Thread is getting waay too moral for my tastes now.

Birdcraft dude is petty and has a bunch of sheepish, self-serving ideas about what is and isn't respectable culture. He's clearly personally involved, so calling him a troll is giving him far too much credit in exchange for the questionable advantage of polarizing the debate. He's here because he's got some built-up frustration on the subject and this was his last chance to vent it and be heard.

Disagree with him, refute him, call him out on his ugly motivations if you want to, but calling his expressions morally wrong because you don't want to hear them and have a taboo on your side is pretty much lowering yourself to his level - intellectually at least, if you prefer to keep that comfy moral highground.

I wasn't trying to compare anyone to MJ in terms of
    specific actions, morals, or behaviors.

I was saying that each person has an individual view of someone.

Like a cop might one day help you get your cat out of a tree,
but a day later, beat the crap out of someone because they
looked at them wrong. So if you ask those two people what
they think of that cop, one would say that cop is a horrible
person, and the other person would say that cop is a saint.

So maybe this birdcraft guy had one bad experience.
But I am assuming that David was that "good cop"
99% of the time, and was most likely a genuinely good person.

I am no expert, but Mr Birdcraft sounds bitter and very opinionated.
And this also seems to be a bit of a case of someone being judged by their work, not by their personality. Like people who bash on people in porn, even if they are very nice people.
