Dead Girls Corp. – Walking In L.A.

Many years ago, I came out to Los Angeles to visit my brother at UCLA and check out the Sunset Strip. I was young, fit, and fearless (a foolhardy adventurer), so I walked all the way from the UCLA campus to the happening part of the Sunset Strip at night. One long-haired metal boy serenaded me with his sidewalk rendition of the Missing Persons song Walking in LA. I think he was disappointed because he usually met girls with cars. Not being a native Angeleno, I was baffled by the idea that walking might be somehow embarrassing.

Fast forward and I’m at The Dragonfly nightclub in Los Angeles and Dead Girls Corp lead singer Toddy T is telling me an anecdote about driving some place in his BMW. Which actually was one of the events which made me finally give up my rusted out Camaro for a gleaming black Town Car, four lanes wide. There is a bit more to that story, but it actually is embarrassing (not to me), so suffice it to say that it feels somehow fitting that Dead Girls Corp cover Walking in LA in this music video directed by Brian Cox.

Lyrics

Look ahead as we pass, try and focus on it
I won’t be fooled by a cheap cinematic trick
It must have been just a cardboard cut out of a man
Top-forty cast off from a record stand
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
I don’t know could’ve been a lame jogger maybe
Or someone just about to do the freeway strangler baby
Shopping cart pusher or maybe someone groovie
One thing’s for sure, he isn’t starring in the movies.
‘Cause he’s walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, only a nobody walks in LA
Walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
You won’t see a cop walking on the beat
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
You only see them driving cars out on the street
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
You won’t see a kid walking home from school
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Their mothers pick ’em up in a car pool
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Could it be that the smog’s playing tricks on my eyes
or is it a rollerskater in some kind of headphone disguise
Maybe somebody who just ran out of gas,
Making his way back to the pumps the best way he can.
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, nobody walks in LA
Walking in LA
Walking in LA, only a nobody walks in LA
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody’s walking walking walking walking walking
Nobody walks in LA
